  64.           DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
  65.
  66.           Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  67.           before buying it.  If you try a Shareware program and continue
  68.           using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
  69.           differ on details -- some request registration while others
  70.           require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
  71.           registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  72.           using the software to an updated program with printed
  73.           manual.Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial
  74.           software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few
  75.           specific exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are
  76.           accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors, and the
  77.           programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are
  78.           good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method
  79.           of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  80.           and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  81.           specific group. For example, some authors require written
  82.           permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  83.           Shareware.
  84.
  85.           Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.  You
  86.           should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  87.           whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
  88.           fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
  89.           And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
  90.           has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
  91.           product, you don't pay for it.
  92.
  93.           DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT

  290.                         Making a Working Copy of Your Software
  291.
  292.                Whenever you purchase software that is not copy protected,
  293.           you should make a duplicate copy of the program disks prior to
  294.           using them.  There are several reasons for doing this, but the
  295.           primary one is that should the working copy be damaged, you will
  296.           be able to make another set of working copies from the original
  297.           disks.  This means that you will not have to contact the
  298.           publisher, wait for a replacement set to arrive in the mail, nor
  299.           will you have to pay for the replacement set!  In a nutshell,
  300.           that's why we make working copies.

  456.                                OVERVIEW OF SPORTS SCHEDULING
  457.
  458.                A typical schedule for a sports league is a round robin
  459.           competition, where every contestant plays each of the other
  460.           contestants before playing any other contestant a second time.
  461.           Sometimes a full round robin schedule isn't possible, for
  462.           instance, when you have ten contentants, each playing one match
  463.           each week for 5 weeks.  Other times, you may have a need to
  464.           exceed a full round robin competition, e.g., six contestants each
  465.           need to play in ten matches.  The LEAGUE PLAY! (tm) SCHEDULER is
  466.           designed to help in all of these instances.
  467.                There are several classic steps in the process of
  468.           constructing an effective schedule for a sports league:
  469.
  470.                 1) Identify the contestants
  471.                 2) Establish the playing locations, dates and times
  472.                 3) Determine any Date/Time/Location situations that will
  473.                    have to be avoided (for example, major holidays)
  474.                 4) Put these components together to produce the schedule
  475.                 5) Reproduce and distribute the schedule
  476.                 6) Adjust the schedule as items 1), 2), and 3) change
  477.                    (This typically occurs immediately after item 5)!!
  478.
  479.                 The menu of the LEAGUE PLAY! (tm) SCHEDULER is modeled
  480.           after
  481.           this approach to preparing a schedule:
  482.
  483.                       1) Enter/Update Contestant Information
  484.                       2) List Current Contestants
  485.                       3) Enter/Update Days/Times/Locations
  486.                       4) List Location Information
  487.                       5) Generate Schedule
  488.                       6) Print Schedules
  489.                       7) Utilities
  490.                       8) Quit
  491.
  492.           There are several important differences between the traditional
  493.           hand-made sports league schedule and the schedule produced by the
  494.           LEAGUE PLAY! (tm) SCHEDULER:
  495.                 1) The amount of time required to prepare the schedule is
  496.                    drastically reduced
  497.                 2) Confidence in the accuracy and impartiality of the
  498.                    schedule are greatly enhanced.
  499.                 3) Modifications to the schedule are VERY simple to
  500.                    accomplish with the LEAGUE PLAY! (tm) SCHEDULER
  501.                 4) Consequently, the frustration level of the person
  502.                    responsible for producing the schedule is greatly
  503.                    reduced (making it more likely that they will be willing
  504.                    to do the schedules again)

  509.                                     MAKING A SCHEDULE
  510.
  511.                A straightforward way to help you get oriented to this piece
  512.           of software is to work through an example.  It won't take very
  513.           long, and will enable you to see all of the features of the
  514.           program.
  515.
  516.                Let's assume that you have to schedule eight (8) teams in a
  517.           children's soccer league (6-7 years old) that will play on
  518.           Saturdays in March/April, 1990. Your community has reserved 3
  519.           time slots on two fields for this level of competition during
  520.           that time period.
  521.
  522.                League Name:           Anytown Youth Soccer Association
  523.                Schedule Description:  Spring 1990 (6-7 year olds)
  524.                Contestants (Teams):   8
  525.
  526.               Astros             Dodgers         Royals           White Sox
  527.               Cardinals          Orioles         Twins            Yankees
  528.
  529.           Playing locations (soccer fields): 2 different locations, 3 time
  530.           slots
  531.
  532.                     Amers Field #1     SAT  8:00 AM
  533.                     Joyce Field #7     SAT  9:30 AM
  534.                     Joyce Field #7     SAT 11:00 AM
  535.
  536.                Your job is to prepare a round robin schedule of matches for
  537.           the eight teams.  The term, "round robin", means that every team
  538.           plays each of the other teams once.  You must then assign these
  539.           matches to the playing location/time slots, making certain that
  540.           every team is assigned home team status as close to one-half of
  541.           the time as possible.  Once all of this is done, you will have to
  542.           type a master schedule and schedules for each of the teams.
  543.
  544.                Fortunately, that is just what this scheduling software is
  545.           designed to help you accomplish!
  546.
  547.                Now that you know the precise names of the teams and the
  548.           exact playing locations and times, you are ready to begin using
  549.           the program.
  550.
  551.                BOOT (start) the computer.  Once you have reached the
  552.           command line prompt, put the scheduler disk in drive A:.  Type LP
  553.           and press the ENTER/RETURN/<CR> key to activate the command.
  554.           Press the ENTER/RETURN/<CR> key again to accept the terms of the
  555.           copyright notice.  At this time, the main menu will appear (see
